Market Reports

As of April 13, 2018

Butcher cows traded fully steady to $1-2 higher this week with top cows in the $83-88 range. Good young feeding cows and Heiferettes trade from $80-105 Bulls traded steady to $2 higher with a top of $108. Futures markets seemed to find a bottom in recent days and optimism in the feeder cattle market seemed to propel prices upward on all classes. Excellent demand this week on top quality cattle with light flesh suitble for grass operations. Light cattle traded $4-6 higher while mid and heavy weight feeders traded $2-3 higher as well. Many producers seem to be on the market looking for replacement quality heifers. In many cases their heifers are bringing as much per pound as their steers. Keep an eye on the futures market as well as how the currency market fluctuates, as these are the two important factors that feedlots use in determining their cattle bids. Bred cow sale on Monday April 16th at 10AM and special holstein feeder sale on Friday April 20th.

Producers that leave their calves intact until spring will always be discounted for cattle that appear coarse headed or having heavy tassles that will indicate they are stags or improperly castrated. IF THEY LOOK BULLY HEADED THEY WILL BE DISCOUNTED!! CASTRATE EARLY AND PROPERLY TO AVOID BEING DISCOUNTED!! ALSO HORNED CATTLE WILL BE SORTED OFF ANY GROUPS THAT ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR EASTERN ORDERS....THESE HORNED CATTLE COULD BRING $5 LESS THAN IF THEY WERE DEHORNED.

If there is any doubt or question on how to do it properly then please contact us and we will be happy to help!!
