Market Reports

As of January 12, 2018

We wish everyone a Happy New Year and as the post Xmas market unfolds we saw butcher cattle improve and a drastic drop in feeder cattle prices. Butcher cows traded $3-4 higher than before the holidays. Top cows to $88 with most decent cows trading in the $80-85 range. Bulls traded steady to $1 higher with top bulls to $95 on limited supply and quality. Feeder cattle have continued to drop since before the holidays as many backgrounding operations fill up and prices fall in line to where the finishing lots want to price cattle. The futures market has also dampened spirits on replacement cattle as well. The largest swing appears to be in the mid to heavy feeders as most 750-900 lb cattle are trading $15-20 behind December prices. Most 800lb cattle fail to break $180cwt. Most light weight cattle continue to trade within $5 of pre Xmas trade prices. Most forecasts expect grass weight calves to resist the market drop in prices.

On our January 29th sale we will have a small estate dispersal sale of 8 Red Angus bred cows that are bred back to red angus bulls. These cows are 3-8 years old and expected to calve in March.
