Market Reports

As of October 23, 2020

Butcher cows lost $4-5 this week as good cows were life or death to break $70.  Bulls were lower as well to a high of $103.50. We had a good mix of calves and yearlings on offer this week. Good light grass types traded fully steady as local orders set the pace. Yearlings and heavy calves were off another $1-3 this week as several negative factors are affecting the feedlot world right now. Lower futures market, higher feed costs and backlogs of ready fat cattle are all contributing to lower prices. Feedlots are having pen space tied up as they are waiting up to a month to get ready cattle through the plants. As we head further into the fall run we ask buyers with larger consignments to call ahead to let us know you're shipping....This gives us the opportunity to tell buyers what we will have on offer. If you are wanting someone to come look at your cattle then please call one of our field reps and we would be more than willing to come give you an idea on value.

****We will be selling a complete herd dispersal of 50+ bred cows on Friday October 30th. These cows are mostly black, and bred to black simmental bulls, that will also be offered for sale. These cows are aged 4-10 years of age and will also include 10 hfrs. This herd is due to start calving in March and April. We will sell them Friday morning after the butcher cattle which will be approximately 10:30am.

***DO NOT WEAN YOUR CALVES AND EXPECT TO SELL THEM 2 WEEKS LATER! THIS IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE A PRODUCER CAN MAKE! NOBODY WANTS TO BUY STALE CALVES. If you do wean them, then sell them the next day, or two months later!

***STARTING OCTOBER 2 WINNIPEG LIVESTOCK SALES WILL NOT BE ALLOWING IN CASUAL SPECTATORS. IF YOU ARE NOT PARTICIPATING AS A BUYER OR NOT SELLING CATTLE WE ASK THAT YOU STAY AWAY TO MAKE ROOM FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE. ALL PEOPLE ENTERING THE BUILDING WILL HAVE TO WEAR A MASK OR THEY WILL NOT BE PERMITTED IN. SOCIAL DISTANCING MUST BE PRACTICED AT ALL TIMES. THIS IS BEING DONE TO SATISFY THE MANDATES OF THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT.

From our sheep and goat sale on Wednesday, October 7th we had a decent run with 350 head on offer. Good lambs traded slightly stronger this week as lambs under 80 lbs brought $240-253, and heavier lambs weighing 80-100 brought $235-242. Cull sheep traded sharply lower from $115-126. Good meat goats traded from $280-300lb. Our next sale is on October 21st.
